Watertown High School Clubs and Organizations

Indicated below are some of the clubs and organizations that have been offered at Watertown High School in years past. A brief description is included. These clubs and organizations can only function if there is student interest and support.

Book Club

Adventure, mystery, or romance – whether you’re into crazy hiking trips or long lost love, the Book Club explores all these ideas with unusual and exciting books. The Book Club is not like your average English class; it’s a trip to different worlds and a change to broaden your mind and meet new people. The students choose from a diverse selection of books such as Coffin Dancer, The Lovely Bones, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. They meet once a month to discuss different aspect of the novel.

Distributive Education Club of America

DECA is a youth organization that encourages private enterprise through marketing projects, exposure to successful business leaders, individual awards, and practical experience in business establishments. It also encourages civic awareness and responsibility through professional conferences, chapter activities, school improvement projects, and support of community activities. This club is available to all Marketing/Distributive Education students.

Film Club

We are here to enhance the appreciation of modern films through viewing and discussing. We watch one assigned film per month, and meet at the end of the month to discuss the film’s content, and to share ideas and opinions.

Foreign Language Honor Society

Students may be inducted into the Foreign Language Honor Society if they have maintained an overall average of 90 after their second year of study of a foreign language at the High School. Students who are enrolled in Spanish 3 or French 3, or in Latin 2 are eligible. The purpose of the Society is to foster excellence in the study of a foreign language. Members are encouraged to undertake special service activities.

French Club

This club serves to stimulate student interest in French culture and civilization.

At monthly meetings, various cultural activities (e.g. dinner at a French restaurant, attendance at French movies, plays and museums etc.) are discussed and planned. Membership is open to all who are currently enrolled or have been enrolled in French.

Interact Club

The Interact Club is an organization designed to better the school, town, and world communities. We perform community service and raise money for different charities. We are always looking for new members who care about the world around them.

Junior Class Executive Board

Our meetings welcome any juniors interested in participating with their class. The executive board meets about twice a month to plan events, and fundraisers to raise money to cut expenses on proms, yearbooks, and picnics.

Library Service

Open to all students. Members volunteer to help in the Library Media Center during their study hall periods. Checking materials out and in, shelving, and stamping student passes are among the regular activities and there are opportunities to help with special projects. Student can gain experience with a wide variety of library resource material that will benefit them when doing personal homework and research projects.

Musical Organizations

Concert Choir meets Monday through Friday as a regularly scheduled class. It is open to all students but is the premier vocal group. All levels and kinds of music are performed. Attendance at all concerts and dress rehearsals is mandatory in order to receive credit.

Band meets Monday through Friday, as a regularly scheduled class. It is open to all students who have had experience playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Concerts are scheduled in the winter and spring. Attendance is required at all dress rehearsals and performances.

National Honor Society

In order to be considered a candidate for the Watertown Chapter of the National Honor Society you must be a member of the junior or senior class, have a cumulative average of 85.00 and be eligible for the honor roll. Once this basic criteria has been met, the National Honor Society advisor will contact you.

Peer Advocates/Peer Mediators

Are groups of students who, under staff direction, try to help other students resolve problems they are having. Students who wish to become a peer advocate or peer mediator should fill out an application in the guidance office. Applicants will be interviewed and if selected, participate in a training program.

Project Earth Club

Project Earth club is Watertown High School's environmental club. Its purpose is to help the environment by providing funds to various environmental organizations that have a direct positive effect on endangered species. The club members also participate in school grounds and Naugatuck River cleanups. The club is open to all high school students.

Prom Committee

The Senior Prom Committee decides on prom theme, favors, colors, and DJ. They also design invitations and decide on the menu.

Robot Team

The Sie-H20-Bots started in 1999 by the Woods teacher Carll Pallokat. They participate in yearly competitions for a program called F.I.R.S.T. In this program high school students around the world build robots to do a task, then they compete them at regional competitions and then the championship if they make it. They hold many fundraisers throughout the year to help with their budget of roughly $60,000. This money is used to pay for registration for competitions, materials used in the building of the robot, shipping of the robot, and travel expenses. The team has won many awards in the past six years from regional winners to awards for their design. They won the New York City Regional in 2000, the New England Regional in 2002, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional in 2004, and many other awards.

School to Career Club

The School-to-Career club provides career awareness, exploration, and preparation for the dynamic world of work. Students are provided with opportunities for exposure to various careers by "job shadowing", field trips, and business guest speakers of their choice.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club is open to any student who is now enrolled or who has been enrolled in Spanish courses offered at Watertown High School. The club, through an annual fiesta and various field trips, attempts to give the student a greater insight into the culture, personality and needs of the Spanish-speaking community.

Student Council

This is the student government organization. Membership is open to any student who volunteers their services through their English classes in the fall. The Council meets least once a month after school to discuss student concerns, plan projects for the student body and community at large and to serve the students of the school.

Yearbook Club

The Yearbook Club designs, organizes, and produces the yearbook for the senior class. This club meets weekly all year long to produce a comprehensive book that represents the whole high school.

ADDITIONAL CLUBS

For the 2005-2006 school year, the following activities may also be available to students. The success of these clubs and organizations depends upon student interest and support.

Any questions regarding eligibility should first pass through the office of the athletic director who will refer all matters to the office of the principal for a final decision.
