Watertown makes states (BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL)

DERBY — Eight minutes from making history, the Watertown boys basketball team was clinging to a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter Wednesday night against Derby. The Indians needed a win to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in 41 years, and the score was too close for comfort.

“We were a little nervous,” admitted first-year coach Ed Sakl III after his club responded in the fourth quarter and brought home a 59-50 victory. “The effort was there; it’s been there all season. We haven’t won a lot of games by a large margin. That’s just not how we play.”

Mitch Wagner scored seven of his nine points, Matt Quatrano had four of his game-high 15 and Zach Buesser put in six of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Watertown outscored Derby, 20-13, in the final period, making seven of eight free throws.

Watertown’s 8-12 record is the program’s winningest since it last played in states in 1969. The Indians played in the regionals in 1981 and 1979.

“It couldn’t happen to a better bunch of kids. They’re deserving, on the court and off,” said Sakl. “I think it’s going to bring some pride back into town. It’ll give the kids in the high school some excitement for years to come. I’ll always remember the senior class as the ones who set the table for everything to come.”

Spring

The Watertown High School track and field team would like to thank Dr. Maxwell and the Watertown Foundation for providing the resources necessary to purchase an automatic timing system.

The timing system will "vault" Watertown to the forefront of Connecticut track and field, as they now are only the second high school (in the state) to own one of these systems.

The boys and girls track and field teams, which when combined include 15% of the school population, are by far the biggest sports contingent in the school.

With this technology, WHS will be able to host large-scale meets while providing their athletes with the opportunities prove themselves against some of the best teams in the state.

Watertown will be hosting home meets this year at the Mill's Complex, and invites everyone to attend and support the team.

Thank you again Watertown FoundationMykal Kuslis, WHS Girls' Track & Field Coach, (First reported in the Town Times, 1/21/10)
