Art 4: Advanced Drawing
This course builds upon the drawing skills refined in Art 3: Drawing. The focus in Advanced Drawing is the mastery of skills and techniques
in a variety of drawing media. In addition to studio work, students will keep a journal and will research prominent artists, artistic ideas, and important events in the art field. This is an Honors level course and requires a strong work ethic. All students taking this course will be expected to create portfolio quality work.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to:
1. Plan and prepare a portfolio.
2. Keep an organized Journal.
3. Construct well crafted works of art.
4. Research selected artists, project ideas, and art forms.
5. Meet all academic expectations appropriate to this course.

MARKING PERIOD GRADE:

30% JOURNALS: Includes all handouts, classroom and homework assignments, research,
student notes, relfections, and weekly sketchbook assignments.
40% Artwork: All works of art completed on time and following stated objectives.

20% Participation: Complete all evaluations.
10% Tests and Quizzes

FINAL GRADE:

20% Final Exam

80% Marking Period Grades.

Week of September 4-7:
NOTE: STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A SPIRAL-BOUND SKETCHBOOK/JOURNAL AND TO
BRING IT TO ALL CLASSES. ALL JOURNAL WORK IS TO BE DONE IN THIS SKETCHBOOK.
Week of September 2-5:
CW: Overview of first project, charcoal portrait (powerpoint presentation)
CW: Warm-up, practice drawing of figure using model. Develop best with value.
CW: Practice individual features and sections of the face using a mirror.
Week of September 8-12:
CW: Research the art and life of Rembrandt; record in journal as per journal guidelines.
CW; Research the portraits of DaVinci; record in journal.
CW: Journal - Value scales of charcoal techniques - blending, hatching, lifting out, white on colored paper.
CW: Journal - Charcoal technique experiment drawings (4).

Rembrandt Portraits

Week of September 15-19:
CW: Journal assignments due on 9/15 for grade. Includes artist research (Rembrandt and DaVinci) as well as
value scales of charcoal techniques.
CW: Work with a partner to photograph your subject. Remember that the photograph shoud be clear, show a
full range of value (darkest darks to lightest lights) and reveal something about the subject.
CW: Using a modfied grid, transfer image to proportionate drawing paper. Drawing will then be transferred to
final toned charcoal paper.
CW: EXPERIMENT WITH TECHNIQUES ON SEPARATE PAPER FIRST, BEFORE MOVING TO YOUR FINAL PAPER.
Consider the tone of your paper, and whether you will highlight areas with pastel or conte.
Week of September 22-26, September 29-October 3rd:
CW: Studio weeks charcoal portrait: portrait due on Thursday Oct. 9 at the end of class, along with Journal and
completed self-assessment rubric.
HW/CW: Unit test on October 9.
CW: Sketchbook assignment value skull (provided!)

Week of October 14-17:
CW: Research the life and work of Renaissance artist Michaelagelo, paying particular attention to
his treatment of the human figure. Record in Journal.
CW: Research the artwork of Pop/Mixed media artist Jim Dine, paying attention to how
he treats his subject matter and background. Record in journal with sample work.
CW: Research the life and artwork of a mixed media artist you find inspirational, be it for
their subject matter or media used. Record in journal, along with sample artist work.
Describe why the artist was inspirational to you, and how you will use this
knowledge in your own figurative work.
CW: Determine what poses you will take photos of for your final project, a conte/mixed
media figure drawing. Take 3 excellent photos of a posed figure.
CW: Experiment with ways to be creative with the conte and other drawing media you
chose to use. Experiment with different backgrounds, toned and untoned to
determine the effect you want.
Week of October 20-24, October 27-31, November 3-7, and November 10-14.
CW: Studio weeks Conte/mixed media Figure Drawing. Due on or before Tuesday Nov. 25th.
Week of November 17-21:
CW: Final studio week mixed media figure drawing. Unit test Friday.
CW/HW: Bring in landscape photographs for pastel landscape drawing (mixed).

Experiment with techniques - blended, hatching and cross-hatching.

CW: Complete journal work; landscape photos due - begin experimentations on selected

landscapes from student photographs. Studio week.

Week of December 8-12

CW: Studio week monochromatic pastel landscape. Demo of preparing gessoed ground for "painting" with pastels. Landscape due on or before Dec. 23rd, unit test Dec. 19th.
